November 22, 2005 07:30 - Caesarean Births

Lateley there's been a lot of news about the frequency of caesarean births that are taking place around the world.

Yesterday, this quote came from the Australian publication, The Age.com:

"A woman who has her first baby by caesarean has a bigger risk of complications if she has a natural birth the second time around, Australian research has found."

Almost 20% of women have a caesarean section for their first pregnancy! The age to become a mother is increasing so these women are older and more likely to have medical and obstetric complications.

The second time these mothers gave birth, and if they chose a natural birth, there was increased risk of uterine rupture, hysterectomy, hemorrhage, infection, and admission to the intensive care unit. Also, babies were more likely to be premature.

What do you think of this trend of increasing caesarean births? Do you think they're necessary? Do you think caesarean births should be second in line instead of first?
