On this page you

and why
Indian baby names are chosen
and what they
mean.
At the end of the page there are

An Indian child is given two or three names.
Sometimes, one of the names is a
secret!
The rules for naming are really complicated
and have changed over time. Here's some
rules for naming babies:
- a certain number of syllables in the name
-- usually an even number for boys and an odd
number for girls
- specific letters in the name and at the
end of the name
- every name is drawn from the names of
God. Because God is present in everything,
all names have something to do with God
- it is a sin to give children the names of
the parents (in northern India)
The ancient language of India is
Sanskrit. Most names in use are found
in sacred Sanskrit writings, although some
are Arabic and Persian.
Most babies are given three names and one of
the names is usually the name of a Hindu
god or goddess.
Do you think that limits the number of names
you can call a baby? No way! There are
literally hundreds and hundreds of names that
refer to gods and goddesses!
Here's some examples:
- Rama
- Krishna
- Guba
- Siva
- Sita
- Lakshmi
- Valli
- Parvati
Other words are used for baby names too.
Sanskrit words are used -- like Gita
(means song) and Anand (means
happiness). A Persian Indian baby name is
Moeda meaning "righteous".
