Unique baby names? You don't have to look very far nowadays to find uncommon names.

Look for unique baby names in other languages. Find out how to pronounce uncommon names in a different country. The same name is pronounced differently in other languages.

You can even make up your own baby names! Here're some ways to create your own baby names.

Create one unique from from two names. What you do is take two names you really like. Let's take two of my kids' names -- David and Daniel. You take part of one name and put it with part of the other name -- Daviel, Danid, Nielav.

Start by creating baby names with names spelled backwards and see what you get: David=Divad. Daniel=Leinad. Angel-Legna. Heaven=Nevaeh (Neveah is a very popular name right now). You get the picture?

Another way to make unique baby names is to take a name and spell it differently: Rainbow = Reignbeau. David=Dayvid. Dawson=Dausen. Grace=Grayse, Graise. Sierra=Cyera.

I know of a family who chose unique baby names for all their kids. Everyone has the name of a car: Sierra, Astral, Tercel ...

Astrology and stars have some good names to choose from: Orion, Saturn, Pluto ... well, maybe not, even though I do like Disney's Pluto!

How about naming your kids after cities, street names, or landmarks? London, Everest, Alberta, Washington, Shea, Austin, Dakota.

Then there are the seasons and months, and nature: April, May, June, July, Augustus, Summer, Spring, Blossom, Lily, Poppy, Pansy, River.

Of course, we all know about celebrity baby names. They name their kids quite ... errrr ... differently! (I'm trying to be nice here.)

So, how do you choose a unique baby name and be smart about it? Remember that the unique baby name you choose will stay with your child for a 100 years or so and will be etched on their gravestone -- so even in death, that's the name they'll carry.

Choose a unique baby name that THE CHILD can actually enjoy having ... a name with some staying power, that is pleasant sounding, that is free of the potential for ridicule from nasty playground creeps.

Always remember THE CHILD is the most important person here -- not the grandparents, not you, not your friends -- your child is the most important, and they should be able to enjoy their name and be proud of it.
