Felix and Oscar

Gillian Anderson and Mark Griffiths have had a second son, born on October 15th.  His name is Felix and their first boy’s name is Oscar. 

It just so happens that Oscar and Felix are the names of the men in “The Odd Couple”, but it’s not known if Gillian Anderson named her sons after them.

Wild Baby Names

Here are some pretty wild baby names:

“Oblio Justice X” -Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.  His mother, Lynette Bondarchuk, named Oblio after the character in a television show from the 1970s called “The Point”, where Oblio was teased because he was the only one in the Village to have a round head.  Everyone else’s head ended in a point.  She says that ever since she saw that show she’s wanted to call her child Oblio.  Mom goes by the last name of “X” too and says she is making a statement as she is a social activist.  One wonders if her son will be ostracized with a name like Oblio.

Talula Does the Hula in Hawaii — New Zealand.  Yup, it’s true.  Talula Does the Hula, now nine years old, took her case before a Judge and won the right to change her name.  Judge Rob Murfitt said:  her parents have made “a fool of the child and set her up with a social disability and handicap unnecessarily.”  His judgment has made him a hero to children the world over who have wacky names.  However, he has caused an uproar amongst parents who think ordinary names are boring.

4Real — New Zealand.  The Wheatons wanted their son’s name to be “4Real” because that is what they said (Is he for real?) when they saw the first ultrsound of their child.  The New Zealand government blocked them from naming him “4Real”.

ESPN - Michigan and Texas.  Two boys were named after the sports network.

Catcher - Portland, Oregon.  Named “Catcher” for the love of baseball.  It started as joke — why not call their son a baseball name like Pitcher, Catcher or First Base.  But “Catcher” stuck in the Kemmerer’s minds.

How about the couple who has put their choice of names on the Internet so that people can vote for them?  The father is an employee at Google.  These parents at least have more ordinary names like Olivia and Ada if it’s a girl, and Dylan, Alexander, Isaac, Levi and Nicholas if it’s a boy.

Some countries control baby names.  In Germany, boys cannot be named “Adolf Hitler” or “Osama Bin Laden”.  The Standesamt has to approve monikers which must 1) reflect the sex of the child and 2) not endanger the “well-being of the child.”

French parents have to name children from a list of government approved baby names. 

It’s the same in Denmark where parents can choose names from a list of 3,000 names for boys and 4,000 for girls.  The final say comes from Copenhagen University’s Names Investigation Department at the Ministry of Ecclesiastical Affairs.

Version 2.0

Instead of the moniker “Junior”, a man from Holland, Michigan has a different idea. Jon Blake Cusack named his son: Jon Blake Cusack Version 2.0. He figures that in this day of technology advances, Version 2.0 is a great choice! This is his way of giving their son a unique, uncommon name.

Mr. Cusack asked friends what they thought of the name and his male friends thought it was “cool.” Female friends weren’t quite so sure.

Celebratory emails were sent to family and friends, designed to look like new software he and his wife had created. “I wrote … stuff like ‘there’s a lot of new features from Version 1.0, with additional features from Jamie (mother),” he said.

Mr. Cusack would like to see his son, Version 2.0, have a son and call him Version 3.0!

Baby News From China

China has 1.3 billion people who share approximately 100 surnames. A disadvantage of these numbers is that police work is hindered. The Public Security Commission is thinking of making new rules so that children will take the surnames of both their mother and father, in a hyphenated form. They figure this will create 1.28 million new surnames.

While the hyphen has been allowed, other punctuation marks are not allowed. One Chinese man wanted to give his child the name “@”, but because it cannot be translated into Mandarin, he was not given permission to use that symbol. He thinks because it is on the computer keyboard, “@” should be fair game. How would you pronounce that anyway? At?

Actor Mark Wahlberg and fiance Rhea Durham have named their new baby son Brandon Joseph. His siblings are named Ella (girl) and Michael.

6 Tips When Naming Your Baby

The following 6 tips will help you while naming your baby. Keep in mind that the names you choose have to last a lifetime.

  1. Look up the meanings of the names you choose. Be sure the names have nice meanings. Don’t just name your baby a name you have heard on television without checking into the meaning. You’ll want to tell your child what their name means. You don’t want them to be embarrassed about what their name means.

  2. Don’t be overly creative; for example, a way out spelling of the name. Every day of the child’s life they will have to spell their name and it gets very tiring. Just ask me — G-l-e-n-n-y-s.

  3. Both parents, or at least two people, should come up with the baby’s names. You’ll come up with better names this way, when you have two opinions.

  4. When both people have chosen a name, don’t be influenced by everyone else’s opinions. You can’t possibly use all the advice you’ll get. Just remember, again, this will be your baby’s names for life — they’ll be stuck with them.

  5. Watch out for initials that spell something that’s not nice. My sister’s initials spelled MES and I teased her about it (sorry Sis).

  6. Look in your family tree. There may be someone special you would like to name your baby after. Also, find out if someone else in the family has already used that name. If it’s a middle name, that might not matter, but if it’s a first name you may want to choose something different.
